Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Set to Dump PDP for APC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is currently on life support as Bala Mohammed who is the Bauchi State Governor and chairman of the PDP Governor’s Forum is set to leave the party for the All Progressive Congress (APC) this week.

According to multiple sources, Bala Mohammed, has already met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC leaders signaling his intentions to join the APC. The decision which was not yet decided as of last week has now been made clear, and it looks like the APC are not actually giving the governor a red carpet.

Mohammed has been told that he will be given a senatorial ticket and the same financial allowances given to other governors who defected before him, this is roughly where the generosity ends. Bala will not be in control of the APC Structure in Bauchi State and will not get to choose who succeeds him as governor.

For Mohammed, getting to choose who succeeds after him as governor is a meant to be given to him. He reportedly went as far to appeal to the APC National Chairman for a 60/40 sharing arrangement, but it is still unclear whether he was granted the appeal.

The negotiations also came with a personal condition that had people talking. Mohammed has asked to apologize to the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu, over an issue that started with Mohammed’s son criticizing Seyi Tinubu for sharing food items in Bauchi State during Ramadan last year. Reports say Mohammed has already apologized, though he said to be uncomfortable about it.

Multiple sources also linked the timing of Mohammed move to the APC to the ongoing troubles faced by his Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, who is facing terrorism and money laundering charges involving about 4.6 billion naira. Yakubu reportedly threatened to implicate the governor if not released which, if true, adds more pressure to what already looks like a complicated exit.a compl

Mohammed has reportedly had a stakeholders meeting this week in Bauchi, which suggests he expects the move to go through.

The People Democratic Party (PDP) who controlled 13 governorship seats in 2023 has already fallen, with governors from Zamfara, Edo, Plateau, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Taraba, and Enugu have all move to APC and Osun’s governor moved to the Accord party and Mohammed is also on his way out.

These leaves PDP with one governor left, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
