ESUT Implements New ID Card Policy After Alleged Racketeering Scandal

In response to allegations of racketeering in the processing of student identity cards, the administration of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has implemented a new, official ID card registration procedure and ordered a refund of money received.

This was stated in an official memo sent to all students of the university by the Office of the Registrar on January 22, 2026.

According to the statement, the decision came after a report submitted by a committee that was set up to look into the incidents related to student ID card processing. “Following the receipt of the report of the committee that investigated the Identity Card racketeering in ESUT, management hereby directed as follows,” the memo stated.

The decision requires Mr. Kizito Walters Kenechukwu, a final-year student at the department of Civil Engineering, has been ordered to return the entire sum of money to the university account after he allegedly collected money from students in regards to the ID Card. “[He] must refund the total amount to the school account or risk studentship and further face disciplinary action,” the statement read.

The management further mandated that the refunded money be deposited into the university’s account within a month from the memo’s date.

The university also announced a significant policy change, that all first-year and final-year students must now process their digital identity cards through the school’s ICT/Innovation Hub. “All year 1 and final year students are directed to process their digital Identity Cards through the ICT/Innovation hub of the University henceforth,” the Registrar stated.

The management advised students who have not yet processed their ID cards should get in touch with the Registrar’s office for further assistance.

Key university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Deans of Faculties, Directors, Heads of Departments, and the Acting Student Union President, were copied on the memo, which was signed by Registrar Ambrose G. Ugwu.

This move is expected to ensure that all registrations are processed through approved university channels, protect students from exploitation, and increase transparency in the ID card procedure.
