Soludo Visits Onitsha Market After Traders Resume Monday Trading

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, visited Onitsha Main Market on Monday to confirm that trading activities have fully resumed, after his recent warning about the Monday sit-at-home practiced by traders.

The State Government, which before the Governor’s visit, had threatened strict actions against markets that refuse to open on Monday, describing the practice as harmful to Anambra’s economy. Soludo also had earlier warned that the market could be shut down for one month if the traders refused to open on Mondays.

Soludo moved around different sections of the Onitsha Main Market, spoke to traders and market leaders, and observed business activities firsthand. The governor’s expressed his satisfaction has shops reopen and trading activities returned.

His presence drew cheers from traders and residents; he further described the development as historic, noting that this was the first time in several years that the market was open on Monday with full trading taking place.

The reopening followed the governor’s assurance on improved security for traders and residents in the state. He stressed that the government would not allow groups or individuals to disrupt the peace of citizens through forced shutdowns.

Traders in major parts of the market opened their shops early in the day, with business activities going among key roads and trading zones within the market.

Soludo urged traders to continue their business activities assuring them that the state government is committed to the protection of lives, property and the economy.
