The AFCON host, Morocco secured a 2-0 win over Cameroon in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday, with a continued brilliant performance by Brahim Diaz.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 26th minute scored by Brahim Diaz, who once again displays his sharp instincts in front of goal. A corner from Achraf Hakimi which was headed toward goal by Ayoub El Kaabi, and Diaz reacted quickest to turn the ball in from close range.
The Real Madrid forward has now scored in all five of Morocco’s matches at the tournament, extending his record as the highest-scoring Moroccan in a single AFCON competition. However, his late substitution with a heavily strapped thigh will be a concern for head coach, Walid Regragui.
Cameroon felt hard done by in the second half after the referee Dahane Beida waved away a strong appeal for a penalty following what appeared to be a foul on Bryan Mbeumo in the box. Despite pushing forward, Cameroon struggled in attack and failed to force Morocco goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou into a single save throughout the match
Clear chances were few and far between for both teams. Abde Ezzalzouli headed just over from another Hakimi corner, while Saibari missed a headed opportunity set up by the right-back. For Cameroon, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou came closest when he headed wide at the far post
Morocco sealed the win in the 74th minute, when Ismael Saibari was left unmarked at the back post, controlled the ball calmly and fired a low shot into the far corner to make it 2–0 and end Cameroon’s resistance.
Morocco, who are yet to concede a goal from open play in the tournament, will face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final between Algeria and Nigeria in the semi-finals. That encounter is scheduled to take place in Rabat on Wednesday.
