The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that the match bonuses owed to the Super Eagles for the matches been played in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have passed all required processes and are set for payment.
Nigeria scheduled to face Algeria in the AFCON quarter finals on Saturday in Marrakesh, Morocco, which is a five hours trip from their present location in Fez, Morocco.
According to reports, players and officials had indicated that they would not make the trip unless unpaid payments were settled, as the team is yet to receive bonuses for all four matches played so far in the tournament.
The Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka Anite, following reports that the players had threatened not to travel for the AFCON quarter-final over unpaid allowances said the payment would start to reflect in the players domiciliary account “either today or tomorrow”.
She further explained that the delay were as a result of the process of converting the funds into foreign currency, which she said was the players preferred mode of payment.
“The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria have successfully streamlined the foreign exchange processing to ensure our players are rewarded without further delays,” she said. “Going forward, the process will be fully streamlined to ensure faster and more predictable disbursements aligned with international best practice.”
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, have also confirmed that the all monetary benefits owed to the players and officials had been finalized.
Speaking to a News Media, Shehu Dikko said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have approved the Super Eagles AFCON 2025 budget in November 2025, ensuring coordination between the National Sports Commision, The Nigeria Football Federation, and the players.
“The president approved the entire AFCON budget on November 14, 2025. From our end, the funding has been fully cleared,” he said.
He clarified, however that funds been approved, processed and disbursed are all separate stages, assuring the players that payments are already being released.
“Approving the money is one thing, processing it is another, but the players know the funds have been approved,” he said.
The Super Eagles have enjoyed a perfect run at the tournament, winning all four of their matches and emerging as the competition’s highest-scoring team with 12 goals.
